Increase Web Traffic with ‘Do-Follow’ Back Links

One of the best ways to get listed high in the search engines is to get lots of high quality “Back Links”.

“Back Links” are clickable links on other web sites that link back to one of your web pages. Search engines look at the number of sites linking back to you, as well as the quality of these web sites. For example, a back link from a website with a page rank of 8 is usually better than a back link from a page rank 1 web site. There are lots of ways to get quality back links from high page rank sites. Many Internet Marketers do this by posting content on some of the most popular Web 2.0 sites, like: Social Networking sites, Social Bookmarking sites, Article Directories, Ezines, Blogs, Forums, etc.. Remember, it’s best to post quality content that is useful and/or entertaining. Then, be sure to include your link within your Author’s “Bio” Credit. You can also increase your back links by commenting on other people’s blogs or in message forums. Do NOT blatantly advertise on these sites or you will be marked as a spammer and probably banned. Be discreet and put your web page link in your signature or in your profile. This is acceptable and good Internet etiquette.

“Back Links” from quality, high-page-rank web sites can be extremely beneficial. But… there’s something you should know! Some websites insert a piece of code into their pages that tell the search engines to ignore these links. These sites make the links into “No-Follow” links. Basically, to us “humans”, the links look and perform the same. But, to the search engine robots, these links are dead. The “No-Follow” links will NOT be recognized by the search engines and will NOT increase your page rank or help you get indexed higher. Now, this is not to say that “No-Follow” links are useless. The content on these pages, including the content that you add, can certainly be picked up by the search engine crawlers looking for different key words and phrases. Real people searching for information can still find these pages by doing a search. And, when they find the page and view your content, they may very well click on your link(s). So “No-Follow” links are fine for human web traffic visitors visiting these high-page-rank sites. But, for the added benefit of having search engines credit your site with quality back links, these links would need to be made “Do-Follow” links as opposed to “No-Follow” links.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to change someone else’s web site to force all your links to be “Do-Follow” links. But, there is an easy way to know which web sites turn submitted links into “No-Follow” links. The tool I use is “SEO For Firefox”. You can set this Firefox add-on to highlight all “No-Follow” links on any web page you visit. You can use it to visit different sites that you are considering posting content to and see if the links from other people’s posted content is highlighted. If they are, then you know that site will turn your added links into “No-Follow” links too. Below are examples of two popular video sharing sites:

YouTube – uses “No-Follow” links (ignored by the search engines)
Viddler – uses “Do-Follow” links (credited by the search engines)

Most article directories allow “Do-Follow” links in the author’s “bio” credit even though they don’t allow links within the articles themselves. “HubPages” makes your links “No-Follow” until you increase your Hub Score through increased visitor interaction. This is a good incentive to get you to submit quality content that people like. When your HubPages score reaches 75 or more, all your links become “Do-Follow”. This is really great for getting the search engines to take notice.

Squidoo is another excellent, high-page-rank Web 2.0 site. This can bring you lots of great link juice back to your web site. But, Squidoo will make your links “No-Follow” unless you add quality to your pages (which they call “lenses”). Squidoo credits you for adding various widgets to your page and inserting pictures & video. When you publish your page (lens) in Squidoo, you’ll be instantly notified if more content is needed for indexing.

Again, there are lots of great, high-page-rank web sites that you can submit your content to – along with your link. Some of these sites will allow your link to be followed by the search engines, while some will turn them into “No-Follow” links. Both can be very beneficial in bringing you quality, targeted web traffic. But, if you want to prioritize your time and target just those sites that allow Google and the other search engines to credit your links and boost your page rank, then get “SEO for Firefox” and start posting!
